Avalon Skaggs Reed

Avalon (Skaggs) Reed of Hodgenville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at her home on January 23, 2022, at the age of 94.

Avalon was surrounded by her immediate family and cherished caregiver.

Avalon, also known as Mammie to her grandchildren & great-grandchildren, she enjoyed her long and blessed life on the family farm in the Tonieville area of LaRue County. She was born in Hodgenville on December 19, 1927.

As the 1980 LaRue County Homemaker of the Year, she loved being with family and friends.

Avalon was well known for her cooking. Many farmhands over the years rushed to the table for the divine experience of eating her food and hearing stories.

She enjoyed painting and was a gifted seamstress. Mammie was also a master of crossword puzzles and a disciplined reader. Avalon professed her faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at an early age. She continued her relationship with Christ all her life. She was never afraid to share her testimony with others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Taylor and Mary Elizabeth Brown Skaggs; her sister Virginia Elmore; her beloved husband of 63 years, Kenneth Eugene Reed and a son Kenneth Taylor Reed.

Avalon is survived by a son Willie (Lauralene) Reed of Hodgenville; daughter Ann Carol (Danny) Hodges of Elizabethtown, two grandsons, Brandon (Olivia) Reed of Hodgenville; Andrew (Allison) Reed of Elizabethtown, one granddaughter, Lindsay (Steve) Roberts of Boston, Massachusetts. Six great-grandchildren; Chole, Alexandria, and Wilken Reed; Harper and Lawson Reed; and Charlie Roberts, Many beloved nieces, and nephews also survive her.

Additionally, Avalon is honorably survived by her cherished caretaker Linda Skaggs of Hodgenville. The family expresses their gratitude toward Linda for her tender care, friendship, and guidance during the last few years of Avalon’s life.

Pallbearers will be Willie Reed, Brandon Reed, Steve Reed, Glen Williams, Andrew Reed, Ryan Dale Bivens, and Billy Woodcox.

Rev. Michael Willingham will officiate the service and share her life’s legacy.

The funeral will take place on Friday, January 28th at 1 p.m. at the William R. Rust Funeral Home Hodgenville Chapel. Visitation will take place on Friday January 28th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Final resting place at Red Hill Cemetery in Hodgenville, Kentucky
